This is Kees Kroot, a man famous for his ears, with which he makes his great sound-designs and music scores.

I was shooting him for this, in different stylings, but this was his actual outfit when he walked into my studio.

Fab Five Freddy

Recognize the man? Maybe a bit older, but no less fab. He appeared to be a walking encyclopedia on the origins of hip hop, and, to my surprise, also on the early days of dance music. Great guy. Wise man. From IMDB: Is mentioned in the 1980 Blondie song "Rapture" and appears in the video of the song, which synthesizes disco with the then-emerging rap music and hip-hop. A pioneer of rap, Fab 5 Freddie met Deborah Harry and other members of Blondie at a club and they became friends. When Freddy suggested that Harry write a song about the rap scene, she did. The result is the rap that is the second half of "Rapture," which begins "Fab Five Freddie told me everybody's high."

Charlie Ahearn, film maker. Director of (amongst others) Wild Style, *the* classic hip-hop flick, full of great subway shots, breakdancing, freestyle mc-ing and rare footage of some of the godfathers of hip-hop, like Grandmaster Flash pulling off an awesome scratch-mix set on a pair of ancient turntables. A must-see for anyone interested in hip-hop music and culture.

Today I flew to Germany to shoot for M. This is Ghana, one of Tom Dieck's troop of big cats. It was kind of intimidating to be this close to a grown male lion, but also very exiting and I was thrilled by the beauty of the beast. Tom and his father Tom Dieck sr. were very kind and helpful, and kept Ghana from eating me.

Yesterday I was at the Melkweg venue to shoot Ice T. Here is one of the shots, still working on some others. The Ice T show itself was fenomenal. Special mention for my man Deams, who opened for Ice. He is a creative genius, and gave us a show that put him in the major league of hip hop. I'll be shooting him soon.

Gouden Loeki award for SP!

For the above short that I shot for the Social Party in the Netherlands, we won a big communication award called the 'Gouden Loeki' , meaning so much as 'Golden Lion'. An award given by the Dutch audience to the most appreciated commercial of 2008.
Much respect here to Mieke, the lady in the film. Thank you for your courage and also for your sincere anger. You did this for the good cause. Thanks also to Agnes and Jan of the SP. Without their brave attitude the film would never have seen the light of day. And thanks of course to Thonik, the communication agency for the SP, who came to me with the rough idea in the first place. Thanks a million to my good friend Ernst Reijseger. He gave us his beautiful music (from his album Colla Parte). And to Hazazah, my production company, who found Mieke. And last but not least, thanks to all the people that worked with me on the project. Congratulations all. The best thing actually about this campaign is that it worked within very few weeks. It raised a hell of a lot of discussion, and soon the health care secretary of state announced some appropriate measures. So thanks Jet Bussemaker. Keep up the good work, I'd say.

Last week the new Supperclub album 'Jealousy' from the Nine Sins series was released. I had the honour to do the artwork for this one. That was my second time actually, the first one was 'Addiction'.
The photograph depicts Jayneen, a famous Dutch fashion model. For this occasion I did not go for a standard beauty approach.
I asked her to think of something that would make her actually jealous, and not to pose as a model. What you see on the sleeve is real jealousy. The album sounds fantastic, check it out at www.unitedrecordings.com or at www.supperclub.com .

I shot him last week for Vrij Nederland Magazine on the occasion of the appearance of his first book. The book concludes a period of many years of thought and research on the person Jesus Christ. The book will probably cause quite a stir.

Curtis Alan Jones is an electronica and house music singer, songwriter and producer born April 26, 1968, in Chicago, Illinois. His style of house music has been compared to and inspired by the likes of Kraftwerk, Prince, Gary Numan, and Nitzer Ebb. In a shocking turn, after staying quiet in the music scene, Green Velvet revealed in 2006 he had become a born-again Christian after a serious overdose of a mixture of Magic Mushrooms, Marijuana, and (allegedly) GHB and promised to turn his life around after this incident. www.green-velvet.com.

Finally, last sunday, I met up with Carl at his Rotterdam stay (thanks Rob at the Westin). It took some emails and phone calls, but at last I could do one of the final portraits for my book 'DJ'. What a nice guy this man is! And what a schedule he has. Private jetting all over the world and back again. He never stops. We had a nice chat, exchanged some stories, took some pictures and then he was off to be propelled into Ibiza and the rest of the world. 20 great minutes. Thank you Carl, and thanks a lot Ian H.!

This summer I am trying to finish shooting for my book 'DJ'. For that I am visiting some of the major events in Holland, like Extrema (thanks Niels!) Loveland (thanks Raymond, thanks Marnix!), Dance Parade (thanks Olga and Esther @ ID&T!) Lowlands (thanks Roy and Peter Bas!), Mysteryland (thanks again ID&T!). So, lots of fun backstage! I shot DJ Hell, who is a very very nice guy and an interesting character, Radioslave, Richie Hawtin (yes, Plastikman indeed!) Troy Pearce, Felix da Housecat (very very nice guy, very photogenic too), Sandy Rivera (feeling better now, Sandy?), Francois K (Studio 54, for the younger reader, the man himself!), Oxia, Sebastien Leger, Secret Cinema, Ron Carroll, Tom Novi, Gregor Salto, Funkerman, Fixmer & McCarthy, Play Paul (brother of one of the Daft Punk guys, whom I was not able to shoot since they forgot their masks at the Melkweg), Quince, Heartthrob, Sascha Funke and many many others. Last but not least: Ben Cullum and his brother Jamie (see above pic, the both now collaborate with ex-Underworld's Darren Emerson). So, productive summer indeed. Busy schedule? Hey, I have looked at the schedules of some of the people I shot here. Mine looks like holiday camp compared to theirs... The sad bits: I missed Grandmaster Flash (felt not too good) and Carl Cox (felt not too good. Maybe in Rotterdam? Elliot? Ian?). Tiesto? I really hope we will finally meet at Mysteryland (Tijs? Do you read me?).

This one was shot yesterday, as a cover for NRC Next's One Magazine. Merlijn Twaalfhoven is a much praised Dutch composer who on a regular basis creates a stir with his special projects outside of the regular concerts on offer, whereby he likes to appeal to all of the observer's senses. His work has won him several prizes in the Netherlands and abroad, it can be heard regularly on radio and it is performed by orchestras both national and international. As a professor in “Pop Kunst” at ArtEZ school of arts in The Netherlands, he researches how artists can reach a new and diverse public without giving up their artistic vision and ideas. He is himself striving to accomplish this in his projects with his foundation La Vie Sur Terre and in cooperative projects with, among others, Theatre Group Amsterdam, Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, the Dutch national Ballet and the Springdance Festival. He has also produced numerous projects on location with local musicians in Central Europe, Cyprus and Japan. His website is www.laviesurterre.nl.

This week I was able to meet up with Orlando Voorn, or the man also known as Baruka, Basic Bastard, Boy, Complex, Defence, Dope Dog, Fix, Fixomatic, Format, Frequency, Galaxy, Judge, Limited Edition, Living Room, The, Maniax Traxxx, Mute, Nighttripper, The, No Guts No Glory, PB 2000, Playboy, Progress, Shy Rock, Solar, Stalker, Tank, Trigger, Ultra, Urban Nature, X-It or OV. In dance music, he embodies the bridge between the Netherlands and Detroit. Orlando worked closely together with people like Juan Atkins, Mike Banks, Derrick May and many others that shaped electronic dance as we know it. Anyway, here's his portrait.

This is Eva Maria Staal, dealer in arms. Not the small ones, but the tanks and the rocket launchers. She has traded with governments and military groups all over the world. Now she has written a book, loosely based on her true experiences: 'Probeer het Mortuarium', or in English 'Try the Morque'. Her debut got her several awards already. This is Kluun, bestselling author of two novels based on his own life experiences. He is showing a bit of his feminin side here, because he is trying to get involved in the equal rights movement by teaming up with feminist magazine 'Opzij' (meaning 'Get out Of The Way'). Not so long ago I was able to catch Curtis for a short sitting. This shot sort of resembles the work of Edward S. Curtis (nice coincidence in the names there). Of course, Curtis' face looks a bit like the older North American indian chiefs, so the resemblance is not so strange. I got into an 'old techniques' thing for this one. From today's shoot, this is Jim. Jim and his pal Victor have an ad agency called Habbekrats, and both have some stature in organizing hip hop parties in Amsterdam. I picked this one from todays shoot because however I know it has a certain stock-photo cq. cheapish giftshop poster quality I still like it.

PANL merit 'Portrait Commissioned'

Yesterday the jury of PANL, the Photography Association of the Netherlands, gave me a nice medal for this photograph. It is one from a series about women that have lost a lot of weight, and the photographs basically show a surplus of skin. The series was shot for Hilde Kreuze's Dik magazine. So, thank you Jury, thank you Hilde, and also thanks to my courageous model.

Krijn van Noordwijk is a Dutch artist and a photographer specialized in portraiture. Krijn is currently working on a book called 'DJ'. For this project he has already photographed many DJ's of name and fame and the series is still growing. Van Noordwijk is interested in DJ's and the dance world, since he is a music producer himself. But also because he wants to 'put an Icon to the Idol', as he sometimes puts it. It appeared to him that many fans around the world who love their DJ's often do not know the DJ's faces all too well. On the bigger events, there is this tiny person on a big stage, and most people never get to see the artist close-up. That is exactly what the book will do: bring the artist closer up. Krijn shoots his subjects in an almost classical manner technically, but the way he captures expressions and moods are rather contemporary. 'DJ' will be a photography book in the first place, but the vast collection of DJ portraits makes the project interesting for a much broader audience. A selection of images was exhibited on 100 outdoor billboards throughout Amsterdam during the recent Amsterdam Dance Event. For the DJ project, Krijn works closely together with Maslow, the design team that have created the visual identity for the Amsterdam Dance Event. Some of the visuals from 'DJ' are used in the ADE graphics. Maslow will also design Krijn's book itself. Through this text, Krijn likes to thank ADE, Mysteryland, ID&T, Barkers, Todaysart, Meubelstukken, STRP and all DJ's and producers that have taken part in the project already.
