The 2009 edition of ADE was a real treat for a portrait photographer like me. I had my studio set up backstage, and shot a heap of new DJ material. Here is my man Cablejuice, one of the leading dj/ producers in the lowlands.
My contribution to an exhibition on the Museum Square in Amsterdam, for the Borstbeeld Foundation, which is an initiative towards a better treatment for breast cancer.
Another one from the Adelheid Roosen shoot for Vrij Nederland magazine. Adelheid was just given the Amsterdam Prize for the Arts, one of the most desirable and meaningful awards in the Dutch arts landscape.
These are Irene & Josephine, with who I had a most wonderful shoot yesterday. Thanks a lot girls! The result will be shown as a large format dyptich on the Amsterdam Museum Square.
Every now and then one encounters oneself somewhere on the web. Like on the pages of the United Recordings record company. I shot some record sleeves for them and Supperclub. My portrait was shot by Koos Breukel, a famous Dutch photographer. Here's the link: http://www.unitedrecordings.com/artist_details.php?action=interview&id=98
Some of the shots for the Aids Fund campaign that has just been released in the media. Sophie Hilbrand, actress and TV personality, Henk Schiffmacher, tattoo artist and painter, Jeroen Pauw, TV personality and Ryan Babel, soccer player and occasional mc.
Today I went out to meet the Dalai Lama for a portrait. Alas this appeared to be a goal set a bit high. Security and schedule were tight, to say the least. This is what I could do, and at least he waved at me once.
Yesterday the Art Directors Club awarded the Socialist Party commercial with a silver award. It can be seen here: http://www.hazazah.com/#/krijnvannoordwijk/portfolio/thuiszorg .. I'd like to thank Thomas and Nikki from Thonik for their great script, Jan Marijnissen and Agnes Kant of the SP for their basic idea and their trust, and above all the brave actress Mieke, who just turned 90 years of age. Also thanks to my production company Hazazah, and everybody who worked with me on the project. Special thanks to my good friend Ernst Reijseger for his beautiful music. Thank you all, and I am really happy that next to the gold award we recently won at the public awards, we are now also awarded by our fellow creatives. Photo's by Isabella Roosendaal.
The first in a series of cover shot's I'll be doing for the new magazine FONK. This guy here is my old friend Lode Schaeffer, on one of his Harleys. For those not from around here: the shot obviously is a spoof on the cover of Jan Cremer's first novel 'Ik Jan Cremer'.
Now this is what I call endorsement =) Thanks Armin! And by the way, my book just got nominated for the Photography Award of the Art Directors Club! www.djthebook.com
Although born in Brooklyn, New York, Robert Rubinstein is a longtime resident of The Netherlands. In 1999 he founded a company to introduce the then-radical concept of sustainable investing. The concept behind this company was the introduction of TBLI –Triple Bottom Line Investing. It seeks to reeducate the financial world. TBLI's concept: a truly sound investment is one that provides not just financial rewards, but social and environmental ones too.
SugaCane, aka Hurricane, aka Cane. He got his name in a period when he was a salesman in chemicals and an entrepreneur in the dating business. This, and also his rather impressive appearance, gave him a solid reputation in the Dutch hip hop scene.
This is Kees Kroot, a man famous for his ears, with which he makes his great sound-designs and music scores. Famous, and well-to-do too, since he is a major BUMA member. Visit his still slightly dull website at www.soundcircus.nl now, or his exiting and highly creative new website soon, because Maarten from Poolworldwide.nl is working on it as we speak. I was shooting him for this, in different stylings, but this was his actual outfit when he walked into my studio.
Recognize the man? Maybe a bit older, but no less fab. He appeared to be a walking encyclopedia on the origins of hip hop, and, to my surprise, also on the early days of dance music. Great guy. Wise man. From IMDB: Is mentioned in the 1980 Blondie song "Rapture" and appears in the video of the song, which synthesizes disco with the then-emerging rap music and hip-hop. A pioneer of rap, Fab 5 Freddie met Deborah Harry and other members of Blondie at a club and they became friends. When Freddy suggested that Harry write a song about the rap scene, she did. The result is the rap that is the second half of "Rapture," which begins "Fab Five Freddie told me everybody's high."
Charlie Ahearn, film maker. Director of (amongst others) Wild Style, *the* classic hip-hop flick, full of great subway shots, breakdancing, freestyle mc-ing and rare footage of some of the godfathers of hip-hop, like Grandmaster Flash pulling off an awesome scratch-mix set on a pair of ancient turntables. A must-see for anyone interested in hip-hop music and culture.
In the M Magazine animal portrait series I went to see this old goat today. He appeared to be quite a character, and could do all kinds of human facial expressions.
This is Tuala, a cat without hair. She belongs to a sweet lady that used to be a body-paint model. She has lovely hair. The cat didn't want to pose at first, but when I promised her some salmon she became more willing. From a series of animal portraits for M Magazine.
Today I flew to Germany to shoot for M. This is Ghana, one of Tom Dieck's troop of big cats. It was kind of intimidating to be this close to a grown male lion, but also very exiting and I was thrilled by the beauty of the beast. Tom and his father Tom Dieck sr. were very kind and helpful, and kept Ghana from eating me.
Yesterday I was at the Melkweg venue to shoot Ice T. Here is one of the shots, still working on some others. The Ice T show itself was fenomenal. Special mention for my man Deams, who opened for Ice. He is a creative genius, and gave us a show that put him in the major league of hip hop. I'll be shooting him soon.
For the above short that I shot for the Social Party in the Netherlands, we won a big communication award called the 'Gouden Loeki' , meaning so much as 'Golden Lion'. An award given by the Dutch audience to the most appreciated commercial of 2008.
Much respect here to Mieke, the lady in the film. Thank you for your courage and also for your sincere anger. You did this for the good cause. Thanks also to Agnes and Jan of the SP. Without their brave attitude the film would never have seen the light of day. And thanks of course to Thonik, the communication agency for the SP, who came to me with the rough idea in the first place. Thanks a million to my good friend Ernst Reijseger. He gave us his beautiful music (from his album Colla Parte). And to Hazazah, my production company, who found Mieke. And last but not least, thanks to all the people that worked with me on the project. Congratulations all. The best thing actually about this campaign is that it worked within very few weeks. It raised a hell of a lot of discussion, and soon the health care secretary of state announced some appropriate measures. So thanks Jet Bussemaker. Keep up the good work, I'd say.
Last week I was hanging with Chuck, Flav & the guys, yes indeed, Public Enemy, in my studio. Now that was a well spent half day.. Still working on the raws.. Set pics by Britta @ Maslow.
maandag 8 december 2008
I just came back from the Roots' show at Paradiso. That was great, as always. Afterwards Maslow and I went backstage to meet up with Questlove, to offer him the book 'DJ' (since he is in it), and Black Thought. Fantastic musicians, very nice people.
Last week my DJ portraits were exhibited all over Amsterdam, on public billboards. I want to thank J.C. Decaux, Amsterdam Partners (I AMsterdam) and Pindakaas (Peanutbutter) Agency for their help and endorsement. Here are some impressions. From top to bottom: Carl Craig, Orlando Voorn and Heiko Laux. The original portraits are in the book 'DJ by Krijn van Noordwijk', which you might check at www.djthebook.com.
This is a portrait I took yesterday of the sweet Professor Christine Mummery, who made history last year, when she and her team created a beating heart from stem cells. Isn't that totally cool? The portrait will appear in M Magazine in December.
Nice, how the DJ book ( www.djthebook.com ) has pleasant side effects: Armin asked me to shoot the cover for his brand new 'A State Of Trance' Album. Here it is. Please check it out at www.armadamusic.nl. I hear it sounds great.
Last week the new Supperclub album 'Jealousy' from the Nine Sins series was released. I had the honour to do the artwork for this one. That was my second time actually, the first one was 'Addiction'. The photograph depicts Jayneen, a famous Dutch fashion model. For this occasion I did not go for a standard beauty approach. I asked her to think of something that would make her actually jealous, and not to pose as a model. What you see on the sleeve is real jealousy. The album sounds fantastic, check it out at www.unitedrecordings.com or at www.supperclub.com .
Wednesday October 22, I presented DJ as the kick-off for Amsterdam Dance Event 2008. Carolien Gehrels (left on the picture), from the culture department of the Amsterdam city council was kind enough to officially open ADE and introduce me, then I did a rather long speech, and then I presented the symbolic first copy to the nr. 1 dj in the world, Armin van Buuren (right in the photo). It was a great evening. Photo by Geert Snoeijer.
Yesterday the first pages of my book came off the 6 colour printing street at KDRprint in Zaandam, in the north of Holland. I was there to check and adjust. It is going to be beautiful.
Better a good neighbour than a far away friend, as the old Dutch saying goes. Today I went to the village of Horpmaal in the deep countryside of Belgium, to shoot the band Buurman (Neighbour) for NRC Next One magazine. This one came out. Cool guys, sweet music, and kind people around them. It was a good day. More about Buurman: www.buurman.be
